What does following Jesus look like in our everyday life? This question has been in my head this month. I want to live a life that pleases God and glorifies Him, and I often find myself thinking that I need to do something major, something big in order to make a big difference! Which leads me to think I need to make a major donation, go on a mission trip, commit to serving weekly meals at the homeless shelter, leading a Bible study, counseling at a camp…..the list goes on. So, let me tell you what God has been teaching me during this month I’ve been praying about this. As I read through the Gospels again and looked at the scriptures that tell us what Jesus did while traveling while “ministering,” what I figured out is that much of his ministry was having conversations with people, sharing a meal with people, showing kindness, humility, and love to others. Yes, Jesus gave incredible sermons and performed miracles, in fact, “If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.” John 21:25.
So, we are not Jesus, and no, we cannot perform miracles. But, can we be the open vessel to what God is doing through us? Can He use us to show who He is in our everyday life to others? I’m open to that possibility, and believe that is absolutely what God wants us to do! Ok God, use me. I want to be a part of what you are doing here on earth! I want others to know you, to have hope in their life, and to know the depth of your love through your son Jesus. So again, what does that look like?
Here’s what I did: I took a look at my week and what was on my calendar and asked God to reveal places where I could serve; in my EVERY DAY life, the life I am already in the middle of. I didn’t add anything more, I simply asked God to use me where I already was, with the people I live with and would be around that week. What’s your everyday? Grocery store, school concert, ball game, Wal-Mart (I always pray before going through those doors), in your own home….You are in ministry, right where you are. Who can you minister to this week? It’s in the seemingly insignificant parts of our day where God can be revealed, and where God will use you. So, minister on my friends!
